Traditional Medicinals Starts $47M Virginia Production

  • Traditional Medicinals has begun tea production at its $47 million, 110,000-square-foot Franklin County, Virginia, plant.
  • The second site has 19 local hires and will eventually make the company’s full portfolio for eastern distribution.

Traditional Medicinals, a Sonoma County, California-based botanical wellness company, said on October 5, 2026, that tea production had started at its new Franklin County, Virginia, manufacturing facility. The first run at the Summit View Business Park plant was Throat Coat tea.

The $47 million, 110,000-square-foot site is the company’s second manufacturing plant, joining its Sebastopol, California, operation. Sebastopol will continue at full capacity while Virginia ramps up to make the company’s range of more than 60 herbal teas. The East Coast location is intended to shorten distribution routes and provide access to regional transportation links.

The Virginia plant has hired 19 local employees and is all electric, with no on-site fossil-fuel use. Four bioswales capture and filter runoff from the roof and parking areas. Traditional Medicinals sources one of Throat Coat’s key ingredients, slippery elm, in Appalachia and works with Virginia Tech on research into the tree.

Founded in 1974, Traditional Medicinals also sells herbal lozenges and capsules alongside its tea portfolio. The company said the new plant is designed to support herb suppliers in more than 35 countries while improving delivery to eastern U.S. customers. Local reporting said the business sold more than 780 million tea bags in 2024.

“This is just the start of what we hope will be a long and mutually rewarding partnership with Virginia.”
