Summary
- The French fermentation CDMO has opened a 5,000 m² facility following more than €20 million in first-phase investment.
- The platform offers fermentation and purification services to help ingredient developers validate processes before commercial production.
Biotech Open Platform inaugurated its biotechnology facility in Clermont-Ferrand, France, on September 29, bringing contract development and manufacturing capacity online for fermentation-based ingredients. The first phase represents more than €20 million in investment, according to an announcement issued by founding partner Michelin.
The 5,000 m² site at Michelin’s Innovation Park–Cataroux has begun welcoming projects. The release reports a fermentation line with capacity up to 15 m³ and semi-industrial purification systems. Customers can develop and validate processes and produce material for application testing before transferring to larger-scale manufacturing.
“Scale-up requires experience, technical know-how and the ability to solve the issues that appear as the process moves from one scale to another,” said Khadidja Romari, CEO of Biotech Open Platform.
The CDMO serves start-ups, industrial businesses and research organizations. NutraIngredients reports that potential food-grade applications include alternative proteins, omega-3s and natural colorants. Its services also extend to cosmetic ingredients and other bio-based materials.
The platform was established in 2024 by Danone, Michelin, DMC Biotechnologies, Crédit Agricole Centre France, Clermont Auvergne Innovation and Greentech. It has received support from the European Regional Development Fund and Clermont Auvergne Métropole.
